What's your opinion about paid Steam mods?

  1. So if you've kept up with gaming news recently (or opened steam) you will most likely know about this 'New way' to 'support' workshop creators. I thought this was very interesting and another possible fuck-up in the long list of Valve's messy past.

I personally think it's ridiculous. Sure, it's okay to have a mod that's free to download and have a donate button for people that actually want to support, but seriously?
£1.35 for an armour set? and plus, Steam take 70% of what is actually being bought as well, so you'd make more money from having a donate button instead of saying 'give us money or no textures', because people want to think it's their choice to support a person giving free things.

anyway, what are your thoughts? I am interested to know :D

Personally coming from a developer standpoint, I can see why people would want to be paid for their work. Some developers spend endless amounts of hours trying to perfect their content so others can enjoy using them, but at no cost. While most developers may be content with that kind of situation since it helps promote their work, others may want to be compensated for their work. The paid mods are those kinds of methodology.

Of course, in my opinion, I would want people to enjoy my mods. If people donate for my content, then I'm happy since it shows that they enjoy using it enough to support me. So my stance on paid mods would be that I don't like it nor do I encourage that kind of act. I think it's unnecessary in all honesty.

When I first heard about this I thought it'll be a good idea if it was executed properly and had a community that evaluated EACH mod.

    And well
    They didn't
And it's a mess right now.

I don't really care as I'm not much of a mod-player myself, but they need to regulate it a LOT more than it is currently if they want it to be successful at all.

It's kinda ironic if you think about it like

Gmod started out as a free mod
Then later steam picked it up and made it an official product
Later in the life span of Gmod, a LOT of communities were made around this mod
    Including this one
And now Steam has implemented a new policy that has pay-to-play mods
And somehow some of you guys hate the idea of pay-to-play mods like

    • Dumb Dumb x 1
  10. I'm sorry but you make 0 sense in this situation. Gmod is a full game with lots of gamemodes and potential, for £3.99. Pay to play mods? £3.19 for a few fucking spells in a game. These mods are not going to branch of into their own games like gmod did, so what you just said is complete retardation.

Well when Gmod first started out you needed Half Life 2, I should know because I was around when it was first released lel (poke). There's a lot of potential for some mods that are alike to Garrysmod to grow in popularity that they'll branch out as standalone games.
Yeah, some mods that are just a simple spell in a game but I'm not really talking about those. I'm talking about the ones that are like Black Mesa and Garrysmod.
So take a chill pill, Adam. I see you often lecturing players about being toxic so again, a little irony here lel.

  12. The option for Mods to cost money should rest on the author's decision.

Honestly, buying mods is good for the people that actually make good mods. Something that changes everything in a new way to create a challenge in the game or make more missions/quests. But, there's always the assholes that put useless mods for extremely high prices. Like, look at this.
A mod for R$314,99 which is over 100 dollars?! Like are you kidding me? Look at the mod's title and the item's name!
Valve should add a limit of money to pay for mods.
inb4 some random guy rates this dumb.

    You all missed the point.

The overpriced mods are clearly people poking fun at Valve, hence "Here comes to money".

This is awful for the modding community, you cannot defend it any sense, valve are taking 75% of the profits, thats unacceptable and mods should ALWAYS be donations and not hidden behind a paywall.
What makes this worse is valve are actively censoring people opinion, people have had their access to the workshop revoked for leaving a negative review on steam about Skyrim.
Alongside this you cannot rate mods that are paid and people are having their access to rating things removed also.

What makes it worse is that modders who don't want to have their stuff on steam, which may i add is wank for mods anyway, won't have much choice if people don't use Nexus Mods, a site that hosts mods for hundreds of games, the site relies on donations and isn't getting many and with this bullshit on steam.

To the people saying "Modders should be paid", people don't set out with the goal of making money off mods, they do it because they want to change the guy to improve theirs and others experiences.
Any profits they make from donations should be exactly that, donations.

None the less the massive backlash from users of the Master Race will probably end up seeing this removed and it will return to normal.

Alongside all this, some modders are already trying to squeeze every penny out of people, for example one Spell mods has a 15% to bring up a message telling you to buy the full version on steam, if this kind of shit continues the Modding scene will turn into the fucking AppStore, something i thought we'd never become considering mobile gaming is the hell hole of the games industry.

Yeah Carned, I see what you mean.
I just believe mods that are well polished and big mods like Black Mesa should deserve a spot as a standalone game (and it is)

Now if we will understand the situation. IT IS HORSE ARMOR ALL OVER AGAIN. So be it there is a thing called piracy where you can get the *paid mods* for free. Either way this is creators making a profit off of projects for games. So youtubers are taking others content and making money off of it. Should they be doing it for *The Fun of it and no gain*? Take this from less selfish perspectives and add me on steam if you like. Mods are basically DLC made by the community. The community will sort itself out. And garry himself has posted his opinion HERE
Not to mention the donation ability for modders is very legally grey as to where it is. Take the Lord of the Rings or Game Of Thrones mods for examples. Copyright and taken down.
    Also @Carned

Don't call yourself the cynical brit 2.0 unless you are willing to try and see it from the perspectives of the modders themselves.
