Concerning Karma Bans

There is always that one innocent player who commits a traitorous act and forces your hand. It happens frequently, we understand. It's not really a problem the first two or three times. Recently boundaries are being broken and players are testing their limits. Karma is something that is lost after killing innocent players and often times for valid reasons, such as killing an innocent for traitor baiting. Lose too much karma and you reach the point of being removed from the server for an hour, auto-ban issued by the console "Karma too low". One ban, you probably did not even realize your karma. Tragic, now you have to wait it out.

The objective of this game, Trouble in Terrorist Town is to win as your role (innocent or traitor). As innocents killing other innocents benefits the objective in no way whatsoever and karma is implemented essentially as an "RDM Manager" to stop players from killing innocents, regardless of the reason. On our servers newer players are known to be naive and unskilled and commit traitorous acts unknowingly, throwing discombobulators where no one can take damage, randomly shooting near players or passing unidentified bodies. All of these are traitorous acts and give reasoning to their impending deaths however, this is where rationale comes into play.

    1. Did they know that was a traitorous act?
    2. Did they do it purposefully?
    3. Did it harm anyone?
    4. Have they committed any traitorous acts prior that leads you to believe that they are a traitor?
    5. Do you know that they are innocent?
    6. Do they intend to harm innocents?
For example let's say someone calls a KOS on a player in the very beginning of a round and that player calls a counter-KOS. Naturally, no possible time is given for a traitorous act to be committed, so you use your rationale and do not kill the player KOS'd but instead find the KOS caller and kill him, to your surprise that player is a traitor.

Another example: If the traitor room suddenly opens and a hoard of players rush in, does that give you the right to kill them all? Yes. Should you? No! A majority of those players are guaranteed to be innocent, putting you in a sticky situation.

Just because someone does something traitorous does not mean that you absolutely have to kill them. Players have been taking advantage of this and killing any player who has committed anything not far from a traitorous act. Why? Some consider karma bans "trophies" and others are just unlucky and have players who always commit traitorous acts, many do it for adrenaline or boredom. Nevertheless, measures have been taken against it. Does this mean you should fear having a single karma ban? No. Two? No. There will not be a limit for how many karma bans you can receive before being issued an extension, this will be something determined only by an administrator but if you are getting karma banned twice a day, you're doing something wrong.
Please learn to limit yourself; fair warning.

Just a friendly reminder that this states the word "absolutely."

It is completely normal to kill someone for a traitorous act, since it's part of the game. But people abuse the traitorous act rules by playing on the technicalities. When someone kills a T, and a harpoon flies off the body, and the inno picks up the harpoon and says "I killed a T and I have his harpoon! Look!" - In this scenario, he can be killed. But do you REALLY think he is a T? Of course not, he just killed a T himself. But, because you are playing with technicalities, you have chosen to murder this inno and purposefully kill an innocent "because you can." This is why mass amounts of karma bans are such an issue on our servers, since this can only be obtained by playing in a very toxic manner. This isn't a fun way to play the game for everyone else. Sure, it's fun for the demon, but everyone should be enjoying themselves.

Think about when you don't do your homework in a class in school, and you're waiting for the entire period to end without the teacher mentioning it. Then, that one asshole in your class raises his hand and says "Teacher! Are you going to collect our homework?"

That's exactly how we feel when you pull stunts like that.

Is there any way to see how many karma bans we've acquired? And do they expire from being counted towards an extension after a certain amount of time?

A staff member can check your administrative stats for you.

And 3 months time disregarding an administrator's discretion.

We as a community should be opening the doors for our new players, and it is one of the worst impressions when a new player comes to our servers and sees that it is okay to kill anyone for doing something slightly wrong. Is it justifiable by the rulings? Sure. Is it toxic? Yes, because it is ruining the experience for other players. And, by allowing our regulars to continue on with this has shown new players that it is okay to do the same even if it is detrimental to the community and creating a further toxic playerbase.

So please, think before you do, because every player here affects the future of our community.

And all we want is for every new player to have a great experience on our servers.

    Thank you.

I highly agree with this. When I first joined the server there were massive amounts of RDM happening that I just hid in a corner most games. And since then I had been killed by more experienced players for not seeing Un-IDed bodies, running with them into traitor rooms, being KOSed back when KOSing a traitor or traitorous act, killing an RDMer who had killed innos but the det kills me for DNA, etc. I had been a lot more free with my guns after each thing happened. When I signed up with the forums and started reading lots of the posts by mods and watching the shoutbox, that's when I came to be more cautious with who and kill and why, giving people chances to check bodies or asking if there was a reason an inno had been killed. I completely agree that some people shake karma bans off pretty easily and I agree with the decision to encourage people to be a little more careful with who they kill and why.

I've seen a lot of players kill another just for the fun of it and when they know they're innocent. It sorta does break the game.
I only do it when I feel like that person is a traitor and he committed a traitorous act.
But I'm glad to see players are being warned on screwing up the flow of the game.

As i was one of the people thinking karma bans were a trophie i found out i find it rather boring to kill everyone for t acts. Though i have killed mass rdming detectives without fear of the karma loss or slay since i was one who loved being karma banned i had once went a day getting 4 karma bans on one server that same day i have now only killed innos for fear of me losing a round not just for t batting

This is very hard for me..

But I don't kill anyone a few seconds right after they got proven in front of me..

Sometimes I do end up killing proven people for doing Traitorus Acts when I forget to mark them as friend

    "forget" :sneakky:

    Agreed.

Common sense and awareness is required of any situation that could be considered traitorous whether is it analyzing the situation or realizing your current standing in karma. As someone with 0 karma bans in 300+ hrs in Vanilla... its not tough to do. Just use your brain. We have impressionable kids playing this game as well as people who are quick to judge and to kill anyone for any little thing creates issues such as karma bans and can create a lot of unnecessary arguing.

Let it be said, that there are staff members and regulars alike who have played for upwards of a thousand hours with no karma bans. It is not hard, at all, to avoid getting banned. I would think it actually takes effort to get karma banned, not the other way around.

Mr Butters For a few to be immortal, many must die. VIP

I used to do this, before @Opii assigned specific rules for me even before I got mod. But its all dependent on the situation, vanilla players cause this themselves as they all spam "T open T room" binds and over voice, @Turquoise and myself have had to gag/mute many people because of this then they all run into the T room and as soon as 1 person comes in that they don't want in there they shoot EVERYONE, now guys clearly if half the server is in there, there is going to be inno's, lets use some logic and not shoot them.

I have quite a few hours of server time and my two karma bans were when I was on vanilla and picked up the dead detectives DNA scanner or got RDM'd by some newbie innocent and ended up winning the fight when they shot me.

That was why when I got my first one I suggested that there be around 7 rounds per map rotation on vanilla and, if we could find more Minecraft maps, we could even cut it down to just like the non-vanilla servers.

I like vanilla, but sometimes it's full of karma bans waiting, as I described, for experienced players.

It's situations such as the two I was in that make me feel that sometimes I get punished for being a good player and playing the game the way it should be played. Not to mention the times where mistakes are made(i.e. Killing an innocent in that grace period after they killed a traitor or being that innocent trying to defend themselves).

I know the main topic is learn to use self control and common sense, but sometimes common sense for a non vanilla server is what gets you banned there; it shouldn't have to be that way. The rotation interval just needs shortened. The rounds already last long enough when there's a bunch of delayed rounds.
